Bevere Faith Seeking Understanding Pages Home About Author Editor Contact A Weblog Dedicated to the Discussion of the Christian Faith and 21st Century Life A Weblog Dedicated to the Discussion of the Christian Faith and 21st Century Life ___ I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. For this also I believe, –that unless I believed, I should not understand.-- St. Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) Friday, April 07, 2017 Scriptures and Prayer for Friday in the Fifth Week of Lent Old Testament: Jeremiah 20:7–13 Psalter: Psalm 18:1–7 Gospel: John 10:31–42 ___ O Lord, you relieve our necessity out of the abundance of your great riches: Grant that we may accept with joy the salvation you bestow, and manifest it to all the world by the quality of our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. We are quick to assert our rights while ignoring or opposing the rights of others. Of course, rights language is quite problematic from a Christian perspective, as I have argued on this blog over the years. The fact that Christians have so casually picked up the language of rights suggests that our beliefs and practices are much less theologically informed and more absorbed by modern Western individualism. That is why Philippians 2:5-11 makes very little sense to those who have imbibed deeply from the well of modern moral reflection; for Paul suggests that it is more important for believers to give up what they think is owed to them, what they think they rightfully deserve for the sake of the gospel. The older student had been somewhat annoyed with the professor taking issue with him at several points during his introductory lecture. The professor was gracious in responding to his student; the student was not kind at all to the professor. At the end of class, the student approached the professor and said to him in a voice that all of us could hear: "I think it is unfortunate that I am required to take this course because it is obvious from this morning that you have nothing to teach me."
